Among the few events in the sailing that have started off this year one ongoing event is the Helly Hansen National Offshore One Design Regatta. Held by the Tampa Bay, this regatta brings in class A catamarans that compete in different races during the weekend of 17th to 19th February 2017.
The first event of this regatta started off with light winds that delayed the races till afternoon. However, the winds picked up comparably and the thirteen fleets that were participating were able to complete two of the races scheduled on the first day.
The class of J/70 has about 32 boats as part of the fleet. This race ended in a tie between Brian Keanie from Weston, Massachusetts and Joel Ronning from Minnesota along with their crew. There was also a race that comprised of youngsters known as the Helly Hansen Junior Crew. Here five local teenagers participated. Tom Burton was in the news with his competitive sailing in the Laser category in Rio Olympics this year. There were certain differences that he had with Tonci Stipanovic in the Laser sailing category. Though he did secure the Olympic gold, he states that his rivalry with Tonci will continue next month in the Sailing World Cup finals that would be held in Melbourne.
There had been a heated match that had taken place between the two sailors in the world cup event that had occurred in France in 2015. Stipanovic was disqualified from the event for which the victory went to Burton, with Stipanovic losing a bet that saw him paying for a chartering in Greece.
