The Newport Harbor Yacht Club has decided to host the inaugural One Design Offshore Championship from June 9th to 11th.
This event will be held at the Newport Beach in California. This event has been organized by the yacht club heeding to the demands made by the regional sailors for a competitive championship of offshore racing. This event has been organized just before the Long Beach Race Week that will be held from June 23 to 25.
There will be three classes taking part in the first annual One Design Offshore Championship and they are Pac52s, J70s, and J120s. The regatta chairman, Paul Stemler, said that the event was put together due to the efforts put in by the NHYC and the local sailors of the region. This is an opportunity for the one design classes to enjoy offshore sailing.
The Newport Beach and the NHYC have been in the past supporting offshore sailing events and have hosted a lot of events like the Star Worlds, Etchells Worlds, the Baldwin Cup, etc. The club thought this as an opportunity to boost the tradition and also to give the local sailors a great sailing opportunity.
Paul said that the club and the organizers are very happy that the Pac52s are taking part in this regatta and hence have arranged for the Pac52s race on June 9 exclusively. They are expecting the Pac52s race to be the highlight of this inaugural One Design offshore racing event in California.
A lot of professional and accomplished sailors all over the USA are looking forward to taking part in the regatta over the three days. This is not all, The local sailors will also be taking part in the event and therefore it will add a local touch and flavor to the event as well as support the tradition and history of offshore racing.
